GCSE Results 2024

There were heartfelt embraces and many happy smiles at Penrice Academy in August where the Class of 2024 opened their eagerly-anticipated GCSE results.

Penrice once again performed significantly above national averages in a number of key metrics.

In the core subjects, over 80% of students secured Grade 4 (Standard Pass) or above in English.

This figure was also mirrored in the Maths scores with over 80% of students achieving Grade 4 or above.

In Science, 87% of students secured at least one Grade 4. Physics was a particular highlight with 54% of students achieving Grade 7 or higher.

There were also success stories in a whole range of subjects including 90% of students scoring Grade 4 or higher in GCSE Art, and 90% again in GCSE PE.

Drama, Health and Social Care and Music BTECs all had Level 2 pass rates of 90%.

Views from Ms Coleman, Head of School

“It was heart-warming to see so many excited students, celebrating their success with their exceptionally proud parents, carers and teachers all gathering in the Assembly Hall this morning. There was a real sense of occasion and it is a moment that each student will cherish for the rest of their lives.”

“Today marked the end of a memorable five-year journey for the Class of 2024 and we are so proud of them. Whilst today’s GCSE results give our students the academic currency they need to pursue future courses and careers, they depart Penrice with so much more than solely grades. The cohort of 2024 embraced the rich variety of extra-curricular opportunities, trips, subject options, long-standing school traditions, leadership opportunities and fundraising activities that are offered at Penrice. All of these experiences have taught them life lessons that cannot be exclusively taught inside a classroom – life lessons that will truly help them to succeed in their exciting futures ahead! We wish our Class of 2024 all the best on their next great adventure!”

Student Success Stories

Isabella - Highest progress score in the entire year group

Congratulations to Isabella who achieved the highest progress score in the entire year group (progress over 5 years).

She next heads to Truro College to study A-Levels in English Language and Literature combined, along with Film Studies and Sociology.

I'm especially happy with my Maths result because I’ve always struggled with Maths, even in Primary School. I managed to get a Grade 6 in this subject. I remember in Year 7 at Penrice I was in a smaller Maths class to receive extra support. By the time I reached Year 11, I was in the second-highest set! My family are going to be so proud.

Thank you to all of my teachers. It has been a great five years!

Yuqian - Outstanding progress and 9s in Maths and Further Maths

Congratulations to Yuqian who has made outstanding progress over five years with us and scored a Double-9 in Maths!

Yuqian also scored a straight set of Grade 8s in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

He next heads to Exeter Maths School to study A-Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry.

“I am also so delighted with scoring a Grade 5 and a Grade 6 in English, as it is not my first language and I needed strong passes to get onto my course. Mr Thomas was so motivating with his speeches every week, helping us to focus on revision.

Thank you to all of the teachers here at Penrice!”

Owen - Head Student secures dream course at Callywith College

Penrice’s Head Student achieved a range of Grades 6 and 7s across the board, with an 8 in PE.

In doing so, he has secured the grades to go to Callywith College to study a BTEC in Protective Services.

“It was really good to get public speaking experience as part of being Head Student; my confidence has really grown. It was also good to have a positive influence on the rest of the school and the younger pupils.

I’d like to say a massive thank you to Mr Thomas. He really pushed our grades higher throughout Year 11 and he really helped us with the journey, including guidance on how to ensure we keep good mental health despite exam pressure. Mr Toms too has been a fantastic Head of Year, he provided so much guidance and resources to ensure we had everything we needed to be successful.”

Baylee - Drama Distinction points to a promising future in the Performing Arts!

Baylee is next heading to Truro College to do a BTEC in Performing Arts and Musical Theatre.

She was part of the Lighting and Backstage Team at a School Production when she first joined Penrice and her passion for the Performing Arts has continued to grow! She has also recently secured a leading role for an upcoming pantomime with St Stephen Pantomime Group.

“I achieved the grades I needed and more! I got a Level 2 Distinction in Drama which is the highest grade you can get. And in Film Studies I secured a 7 which is great because the subjects are linked in many ways.

A special thank you to Mrs Ames [Drama Teacher]. She has gone unbelievably far for all students and has pushed us to our limits. I’m so glad she has helped us – thanks to her I have secured this Level 2 Distinction in Drama.

I have made the best friends I ever could have asked for during my time here. The teachers have all been amazing, so thank you to all of them.”
