Penrice Student Elected on Cornwall Youth Council

Penrice Academy is incredibly proud to announce that Year 11 student, Sofia, has been successfully elected to the Cornwall Youth Council, representing the St Austell and Newquay constituency for the next two years.
Sofia’s achievement follows a countywide election that saw over 13,500 young people cast their votes. Across Cornwall, just 18 young people were appointed as Elected Members, and Sofia is one of them.
“I want young people to feel heard.”
For Sofia, standing for election wasn’t about recognition; it was about representation.
“I felt like a lot of people feel their voices are not heard, especially young people,” she explained. “I wanted to run for election so that I would have a chance to allow people to have their voices heard. It is also based on what I want to do in the future.”
Her passion for speaking up for others stems from her home life. Sofia credits much of her inspiration to her father, whose enthusiasm for his creative career shaped her own outlook on ambition and purpose.
“He’s a graphic designer, but he always had a dream of being a graphic designer – and he did it. It’s the thing he loves the most in the world. He has inspired me to do the things I like, be good at them, and do things that will help me to really enjoy my life.”
It’s clear that this sense of motivation and compassion is central to who Sofia is, and what she hopes to bring to the Youth Council.
“I really like people having their voices heard. There are so many specific issues that some people feel are not talked about enough. When it comes to politics, it’s the idea of helping people, and putting things in place to help people.”
A Strong Start at County Hall
Sofia began her official two‑year tenure on Saturday 21st March, when she joined the other elected members at County Hall in Truro for their first gathering. During the session, councillors were divided into campaign areas based on their election statements.
Sofia was placed in the Increasing Youth Voice and Support campaign area, a perfect match for her motivations and goals.
Looking to the Future
Beyond her Youth Council duties, Sofia is already thinking ahead. After her GCSEs, she plans to study Politics, Sociology and Biology at Callywith College - subjects that allow her to explore the systems behind society and further understanding people.
With such dedication and drive, there is no doubt Sofia will make a meaningful contribution both to the Youth Council and the wider community it serves.
A Proud Moment for Penrice
Penrice Academy is immensely proud to see one of our Student MPs stepping forward to influence positive change across Cornwall.
We look forward to following her journey and celebrating everything she achieves in the years to come.
