Year 7 Students Make Their Mark Through Art

This week, all of our Year 7 students stepped away from one of their usual lessons to take part in The Big Draw 2026, embracing this year's inspiring theme, 'Make a Mark'.

As part of the day, students explored the work of contemporary artist Petrit Halilaj and discovered how art can be used to tell powerful stories and express hope during difficult times. Year 7 learnt about Petrit's childhood experiences during the Kosovo War, when he was forced to leave his home and live in a refugee camp. Through drawing, he recorded his memories, dreams and aspirations, often portraying himself as a bird flying towards freedom and a brighter future.

Inspired by his story and artwork, our Year 7 students worked collaboratively to create a large-scale bird installation. The project encouraged them to think creatively about themes of resilience and escapism, while reflecting on how art can help us better understand ourselves and the world around us.

Throughout the day, students demonstrated impressive creativity and excellent teamwork. It was wonderful to see so many young people fully engage with the project and use their artistic talents to bring their ideas to life.

On Thursday evening, we opened our doors for the Year 7 Meet the Tutor Evening where visiting families got the opportunity to see the art installation for themselves.
