The Farm
Welcome to our very own Academy Farm – a place where hands-on learning and nature come together in the most exciting ways! Our ‘Outdoor Learning Environment’ features a spacious barn and multiple outdoor paddocks, creating the perfect setting for our diverse and lovable animal family.
Meet our furry and feathered friends: goats, a pony, pigs, guinea pigs, rabbits, chickens, degus, an African land snail, and even a bearded dragon! These animals are cared for by our dedicated students alongside our expert Farm Manager. Plus, we have two friendly cats and two farm dogs who are always ready to join in the fun!
At Penrice, we believe in giving students the chance to take ownership and responsibility for the animals during their time here. Whether it’s helping with farm chores/maintenance during breaktimes or simply enjoying some quality time with the animals, it’s an amazing opportunity to bond, build respect, learn new skills, and even make lasting friendships!
In Year 9, we offer a BTEC Level 2 qualification in Animal Care – a fantastic way to deepen your knowledge and passion for animals. Join us and discover the world of animal care like never before!
Our Animals
We work alongside Kernow Farm and Equine Vets and Penmellyn Vets to provide our animals with the best care. We routinely take extra measures to ensure optimum animal health and welfare. These include faecal egg counts and equine dentistry.
Our farm animals have all been specially chosen for their gentle temperaments and are a great way of building confidence and self-esteem in our students. Animals are a great form of therapy and our farm animals provide emotional support through calm interactions to students that need it.
BTEC Level 2 Animal Care
We offer a BTEC Level 2 in Animal Care, which is a hands-on course containing elements of practical and theory work.
This course is currently run by the Science department and taught by teachers passionate about animal welfare.
What's covered
- Animal Health
- Animal Welfare
- Housing and Accommodation
- Animal Handling
- Animal Health and Diseases
- Health and Safety
- UK Legislation
These modules also cover the day-to-day duties of animal management, including feeding, weighing, health checks, mucking out and grooming.
The course supports and helps to develop students social, emotional and physical skills through outdoor learning and could lead onto a Level 3 in Animal Care at college. As Cornwall is hugely dependent on farming, this is a great entry course into a career in the Agricultural sector.
