Year 11’s ‘Sensational’ GCSE Results 2018 It has been a sensational morning for our Year 11s, opening some of the best results Penrice has ever seen. In another year of uncertainty with the new grading system, Year 11 should be immensely proud of their determination to achieve the highest positive progress grade ever recorded at Penrice – smashing last year’s outstanding results. This year sees a record level of individual student achievement – each one of them above all expectation – with results our Year 11s can treasure for life. 76% of our students achieved positive progress across the Ebacc subjects – Science, Humanities and Languages. The progress within our Science and Languages departments is the highest the Academy has ever seen. Gavin Thomas, Raising Standards Lead at Penrice, said: “There are no secrets to these brilliant results; Year 11 put the work in all year and are now enjoying the rewards. We are so proud of them – especially their outstanding commitment to the revision process through our brand new #Revise100Hours program.” “For us it’s about all students aspiring to be the best they can be and we can say with certainty that they have gone above and beyond this.” 83% of all students achieved at least a standard pass in English and 70% achieved a strong pass. 15 students achieved a top grade 9 across GCSE English, and 10 achieved a top grade 9 in Maths. Science results this year are exceptional, with 90 top grades (8+9) awarded, equivalent to Legacy A* and A**. 8 individual students achieved triple 9 in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. 100% of students at Penrice were entered for at least two Sciences and 77% achieved 2 standard pass grades. 87% of students achieved at least one grade at 4+. This is ahead of a massive renovation project across the Science Department which this autumn sees four renovated Science classrooms and two brand new Science Classrooms at the Academy. Doug O’ Brien, Science Lead, said: “Every year Science gets bigger and better both inside the classroom with our exhilarating curriculum, and outside with our Mable Program which challenges our Scientists beyond school. With Year 11’s progress and our brand new facilities opening soon, this is just the beginning for Science at Penrice.” This year sees record breaking results in Languages, with 89% of students achieving at least a standard pass in GCSE French, German or Spanish. In Spanish, 53% of the students entered achieved top GCSE grades 7, 8 and 9 (broadly equivalent to A/A*/A**) Jenni Oddy, Head of Languages, said the Modern Foreign Language Department are ‘absolutely thrilled’. “What a brilliant set of results! We are so proud of our students and all their hard work over the past three years. These days a good grasp of multiple languages opens doors more than ever and these results will see our students travel, experience and live their greatest lives across the globe, equipped with the skills to do so with confidence.” This year’s results come alongside a superb year of extra-curricular success for Year 11, with a huge number of students completing their Duke of Edinburgh, competing in Ten Tors and representing their school in sports across the county, country and in Europe. Penrice PE Department also celebrated fantastic results with 100% of students achieving at least pass grades and 50 achieving Distinction and Distinction*. 32% of students achieved top GCSE grades in Computer Science (7, 8 and 9). 99.3% of our students sat their entire cohort of exams and 69% achieved English and Maths at grades 4 and above – equivalent to a Grade C. Richard Baker, Principal, said: “The support provision is fantastic at Penrice Academy and to see all of our students, especially those who face immense personal challenges during their time at school, excel and progress is what it’s all about.” “We are absolutely delighted with how much progress our students have made in their Progress 8, which is significantly higher than the national average. It’s an indicator that every one of our Year 11s are achieving their best, which is fantastic to see.” “We wish the Class of 2018 the very best as they move on in their life, and we look forward to hearing of all their future successes.” See more pictures from Results Day 2018 here.
