Before half term, Penrice Academy Students presented Merlin MS Centre in St Austell with a cheque for £2273.17, following a week of fundraising events in the run up to Christmas.

Every year the school holds a charity fundraiser and this year the Academy Council, made up of representatives from each year, decided to hold a ‘charity week,’ allowing each year group to organise their own fundraising day to raise money for this year’s charity, The Merlin MS Centre.

Jack Parr, Year 9, said: “This was a very informative trip. It was really interesting to learn about the use of oxygen chambers and how these can be used to treat many different illnesses, and also see the combined effort and dedication from the staff. I am pleased to see that our raised money is being put towards a great cause!”

The charity events included Year 7’s Disco, Year 8’s Cake Sale, Year 9’s Christmas Fete, Year 10’s Sport Activity Day and Year 11’s non-uniform day and chocolate tombola.

Billie Powell, Head Girl, said: “The MS Centre provides a personal support service for those with MS and other neurological conditions. These services include providing care and therapy as well as someone to talk to and, as it is the only MS centre in Cornwall, its work is invaluable. I am extremely grateful to everyone who donated, whether it was their time, their money or prizes. The money raised has gone to an extremely good cause and will really make a difference.”

Wizard of Oz Rehearsals

Rehearsals have begun for this year’s school play – a classic take on the popular children’s story, The Wizard of Oz, which promises to be 'full of colourful costumes and fabulous music, ' according to Mr Jones.

Daisy Devlin, who’s set to play Dorothy alongside Maddie Wood, pictured above, couldn’t be happier with how it’s going: “I was absolutely over the moon to be given the part of Dorothy after auditions, she said.

“Singing, dancing, performing… it’s my absolute favourite thing and when this comes together it’s going to be amazing. Everyone is so passionate about it and now it’s been delayed a bit, so there’s more time… it’s going to be even better!”

“Computer Science is a new and exciting subject in the Penrice curriculum and is proving to be challenging. Students like Sonny and Cameron have risen to this by demonstrating excellent programming skills. In Year 9, Oliver has made a brilliant start to the course; being inquisitive and always seeking to learn more.”
“Year 10 students nominated for Information & Creative Technology have all been working on creating a digital portfolio about themselves. They have shown a mature approach with a professional outcome. Dillon has worked consistently at the top level of I&CT in Year 11. He shows a keen interest in learning new skills and developing his knowledge in web design. Jay has proved himself on the theory side being the top student in the recent exam.”
