It's set to be a cold February - stay safe. Thank you to staff and students for their hard work this week.

Year 10 Radio Competition
Winners Record at Pirate FM

This week, six students from Penrice Academy wrote and recorded a radio advert at Pirate FM, as winners and runners up of last month’s competition aboard the Pirate FM Media Bus.

Olivia Rootes, Toni Miller, Natashia Goodwin, Jake Forrester, Jessica Stevens and Georgina Rowe spent the day touring the studio, working closely with the radio team, developing their understanding of broadcast journalism and recording an advert of their own.  They were also interviewed by Pirate FM’s Breakfast team, Neil and Tina, about their plans for work experience this year.

Natashia said: “Today was really great. It was educational in that we learnt a lot about radio and adverts but it was also so much fun, and everyone at the station was really welcoming.”

The Media Bus visited Penrice Academy last month; the first ever visit to a school in Cornwall. Seventy Year 10s were encouraged to see apprenticeships in a new way, discussing what’s available and who can do them. The day ended with the opportunity to build a 30 second radio commercial, with teams working together to write, edit and produce a commercial to promote apprenticeships in Cornwall.

Following visiting four other schools in the county, the adverts were judged at Pirate HQ and Penrice were chosen as winners and runners up, with the students travelling to Redruth to professionally record their advert.

Mr Parker, Principal, said: “We are extremely proud of these young people who have shown themselves to be capable and ready to start work already.”

Be sure to listen out for the advert – it’s due to play across Cornwall on Pirate FM after half term.

Students Embrace Robotics in Computer Science

Penrice Academy is fully embracing the Computer Science Curriculum through the use of a ‘mini Mars Rover’.

“It works by using a mini computer with an SD card as a hard drive", Computer Science Teacher Mr Adams explains. "The SD card contains the instructions which the computer follows, and this connects wirelessly to the students’ iPads, in turn allowing them to follow it around the school – much like how NASA would monitor the Mars Rover as it examines rocks.”
