Star Student: Arlene, Year 10

This week’s Star Student is Arlene from Year 10. She gained some exceptional extra-curricular experience during the summer to help her reach the ultimate goal of being a paramedic.

Arlene explains: “Over the summer holidays I went to Royal Cornwall Hospital and did a day of work experience at the hospital to learn more about what goes on there every day. I received two certificates – an Observer Certificate for sitting on a Maternal Acute Illness Management Course and one for the work I did in administration.”

“I really enjoyed my day at Treliske. I want to go into medicine when I leave school and I just feel it really helps me gain experience in the area and is great for my CV and something to talk about in the future. This was my first experience and I loved all of it – especially the paperwork side of things as I learnt so much so quickly. I took notes which I will keep forever and look over and over as I learn.”

Arlene said the experience is a great start for her future career and she plans to continue to work hard with this goal in mind: “My dream job would be a paramedic – I love medicine but I think experiencing being on the scene and helping people like that would be better for me.”

“I’ve learnt that there’s two ways into it; either you work from the bottom after school and gain experience, or you work hard at school, get good grades and study more. I want to go to university to do a medical course after A Level Science – that’s the plan!”
