Sport Report: 25/09/2015 Another busy week in Penrice Sport with 12 fixtures taking place, featuring 192 students, including three cup fixtures with six schools from around Cornwall playing at Penrice in Rugby, Football and Netball! With training programmes now up and running the students are reaping the benefits of their commitment to training with results continually improving. Notably this week there was a clean sweep of victories against Fowey in the Rugby, progress in the Cornwall Cup for the Year 9s and victory for the Year 8 Netball team against Brannel. There is more sporting action taking place today with the Year 8 boys Rugby team playing our local rivals Poltair in the first round of the Cornwall Cup at Penrice. The game is due to kick off at 3.30pm – look out for news next week. The busiest days of the week were Tuesday and Wednesday where the Year 9 Rugby team comfortably made it through to the second round of the Cornwall Cup at home to Bodmin. Despite excellent conditions for Rugby, the game was often error strewn with Penrice conceding possession on several occasions and it was only their power, physical presence and glimpses of individual excellence that saw them through comfortably 56-5 in the end. The players themselves know it will take a much better performance if they are to better their semi-final finish from last year, they await the winners of Callington and Brannel in the second round. Also on Tuesday the girls of Year 8 and Year 10 welcomed Truro High School for the opening Netball fixtures of the year. All the girls performed admirably throughout and it was the Year 10 team who came closest to victory, eventually earning an 18-18 draw in a pulsating end to end game which could have gone either way. The Year 8s though, competitive throughout, ended out on the losing side 19-11. Neve Rowe-Hall earnt the most valuable player of the game for an excellent performance. On Wednesday in the Netball, the Year 7s, Year 11s and again the Year 8s were in action and this time the opponents were Brannel. The Year 8s turned in the performance of the day with an 18-11 victory, with Evie Bishop the star performer. The Year 7s in action for the first time for Penrice narrowly lost 6-4 and take plenty of positives in their next match. Finally the Year 11s lost in another competitive game, the final score finishing 25-17. In the Rugby, Fowey brought across four age groups, all except Year 9, and it was Penrice who completed a clean sweep of four victories out of four. The Year 7s continued their encouraging start to the year with a comfortable 55-0 victory, the Year 8s earnt their first victory of the season with a solid performance winning 32-15, the Year 10s won 47-12 and finally the Year 11s won 57-5. The week actually started in disappointing fashion, with the Year 9 boys Football team being knocked out of the National Cup at the first attempt on penalties against another Cornish school, Wadebridge. After drawing the game 2-2, the boys lost the game on penalties 3-2. It is hoped this disappointing performance and result will act as motivation for the boys when they start the defence of their County championship in January.
