What’s On Offer

Skills Squad

We are delighted to be able to invite you to our Summer Academy for some extra sports sessions! Fitness is important for our well-being. We will work hard to improve your fitness levels, but also teach you the core skills that will enable you to have more confidence in your performance! We have planned the sessions carefully so that there are opportunities for everyone – you might even try a sport that you haven’t done before!

Sequences in Nature

Have you noticed how the world is made up of patterns? Sunflowers? Butterflies? Leaves? Nature is full of beautiful patterns – As part of our learning, we will start our journey looking for these patterns. We will continue our journey by investigating the two most intriguing sequences, creating a variety of 2D and 3D models to represent the Fibonacci and Sierpinski sequence.

Greece is the Word!

During the week we will explore all that is Greek! Not only will we look at the history of some of the most renowned Greek Mathematicians but also Greek Mythology. Using our knowledge, we will design our own ‘genius inventions’ and create our own Greek artefacts as if we are Greek Legends ourselves!

On The Farm – Animal Husbandry

Do you fancy learning more about the animals that we have on our school Farm? Since you joined the Academy, our Farm has expanded, we have a range of animals, including goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs, degus, a bearded dragon and a miniature Shetland pony!

Our Summer Academy ‘On The Farm’ gives you the opportunity to experience agriculture in action whilst assisting with the day to day care of our animals and maintenance of the farm.

Activities will include animal husbandry, feeding, handling, pasture management and routine procedures such as hoof trimming and grooming. All new experiences! The farm is a great environment for developing teamwork skills, gaining confidence and learning about responsible animal ownership. The animals look forward to seeing you in August.

Creative Clay

Come to the art studio where we will be working with clay to create an installation menagerie of over a hundred animals. We will learn how to make the body, check the proportion, use the best smoothing techniques, before carefully adding textures with weird and wonderful tools to bring our creatures to life.

Our herd will then be displayed around the Penrice grounds. Will you be able to locate it in September?

Machine Mayhem

Computers and Robots are all around us and they are capable of extraordinary things, but how do they work? Are there wizards and magicians inside providing instructions or are these devices thinking for themselves?

The simple answer is no! Join us this summer at Penrice and explore the world of computational thinking and robots. The challenge is set; you are a scientist in the year 3021 onboard Her Majesty’s Spaceship Explorer. The ship has broken down and you are drifting in space. Complete a series of challenges to enable you to restart the engines and get back underway!

We will also explore the world of robot land vehicles and airborne drones. How do these devices receive instructions? Find out this Summer as you learn how to control these seemingly autonomous devices.

A Journey Into Africa!

Have you ever been to Africa? We will take a skydive right into the heart of the world’s second largest continent. No matter whether you’ve been here before or whether you haven’t, you’re bound to have heard of the Sahara desert, the pyramids of Egypt and Mount Kilimanjaro. You’ve probably also seen lions, cheetahs and elephants and the rich array of wildlife that Africa has to offer. However, did you know that the majority of the music we listen to today can trace its roots to Africa?

Most genres including Pop, Rock, Jazz and Rap are all descended from the traditional African musical tradition… So, don your parachute and experience the flight of your life as we take a safari into the musical heritage of Africa!

As we land from our skydive, our journey will begin on the coast of West African where we will experience a traditional Liberian folk tune and learn to perform this in different parts. Following this, we will venture across into the Sahara desert and discover the traditional African drumming music of Mali. We will explore the important role this music has in age-old African ceremony and will have the opportunity to perform on a range of African instruments, including djembes, shekeres and kalimbas. We will finish our expedition by trekking down into the Congo Basin and experience the natural sounds of the sub-Saharan rainforest.

I hope you’re ready for an incredible journey – don’t forget the parachute!

The Call of the Wild

Explore a cold, barren but starkly beautiful Alaska, run with sled dogs, explore the meaning of acceptance and loyalty, and release your inner wolf with the power and magic of words.
We will follow Buck a big-hearted dog whose blissful domestic life gets turned upside down when he is suddenly uprooted from his California home and transplanted to the exotic wilds of the Alaskan Yukon in the 1890s. The Call of the Wild is a story of transformation in which the old Buck—the civilized, moral Buck—must adjust to the harsher realities of life in the frosty North, where survival is the only imperative.

The moral of The Call of the Wild is to follow your instincts – Will you learn to follow yours?

Deep Sea Divers

Join us as we head deep into the ocean to explore the sea that surrounds us and tell stories of survival, memory, and swashbuckling pirates! We will turn seascapes into soundscapes, release the ocean to flood the stage, climb aboard with Captain Black Beard, and swim into the belly of the ocean.

Stories are all around us, from your favourite childhood page-turners to tales of trysts that never were, and those fables passed from years gone by. So, grab your snorkel, clear your throat, and prepare to tell the tales of our Cornish coast.
