National Award for Young Carers!

Penrice Academy has become the first school in Cornwall to receive the Bronze award for work in ensuring that Young Carers don’t miss out on education.

“Young Carers have been a massive support network for me at home and at school, if I’m struggling or just need someone to talk to, I always have the Young Carers support group to help. Even for the small things.”

The Young Carers in Schools programme helps primary and secondary schools improve outcomes for Young Carers and celebrates good practice through the Young Carers in Schools Award.

The Bronze Award recognises that Penrice supports young carers in many ways, including homework clubs and drop-in sessions with a member of staff who is responsible for this vulnerable group of pupils.  Vital information about how to identify Young Carers is made available to all school staff, and noticeboards and the school website let students and their families know where to go for help.

Mr Baker said: “1410 students come to Penrice every day and all of them have an individual story to tell. However, over 90 students have been identified as having a ‘caring role’ within the home. I find it inspirational that these children not only support themselves but also members of their family in some very difficult circumstances.”

“This national award is the only one to be awarded in Cornwall and is a real honour for the school to achieve this. I’m absolutely thrilled and delighted that the work of Lynne Gouldsmith and the Young Carers that she supports every day has been recognised in this way. Congratulations and thank you to Lynne.”

Young Carers are responsible for emotional, practical or physical care for a parent, sibling or other family member who has a physical disability, mental health issue or substance misuse issue.

Mrs Gouldsmith said she is immensely proud of the students she works with every day: “I’ve worked with Young Carers in Penrice for the last six years. It is difficult to identify Young Carers in school and they don’t always know to come forward and tell us about their situation, as it’s such normality to them.”

“At Penrice we work very closely with Kernow Young Carers, who provide additional support to the students. They meet with them on a one-to-one basis and offer trips and activities during the school holidays.”

“The Young Carers are an inspiration to work with as they never moan or complain about their situations and we can all learn lessons from them.”
