Future Chef 2015

On Tuesday 13th October the final school round of Future Chef 2015 took place at Penrice, where six of our top student chefs competed for a place in the next round of the culinary competition. They were tasked with producing a dessert dish of their choice within one hour.

After some time practicing at home, Madi Cole, Jodie Hamley and Jonah Goodman from Year 9 and Ashley Gilder, Courtney Poad and Oliver Purdie from Year 10 set to work in one of the Catering rooms crafting their desserts.

Joining them were guest judges and expert chefs Gareth Paget and Nick Hemming from St Austell Brewery to mentor the students, judge dishes and provide invaluable feedback and advice. Gareth and Nick are ambassadors for Future Chef, a programme designed to inspire young people to cook both as a life skill and in a possible future career.

Nick, who is Catering Development Manager for the Brewery, said it’s great that Penrice gets behind this sort of event: “The Penrice students have done really, really well. I find these guys inspiring – it takes bottle to perform like this in this sort of environment. Our industry is struggling with lack of skilled chefs and all students here show amazing promise. With tourism as it is, catering is the number one job opportunity in the South West that will thrive and young people like these are bound to lead the future of the industry.”

Year 9’s Madi Cole, who made crushed homemade ginger biscuits layered with a tart lemon posset and finished with a thin layer of freshly made raspberry coulis, and Ashley Gilder from Year 10, who made Autumn Eton Mess with a blackberry soup, were selected by the judges as the two competitors to move on to the next round. The next round will be held in St Austell next month.

Mrs Knowles, Catering Teacher at Penrice, said: “The results were outstanding with extremely complimentary comments made by the judges. Both said they would be happy to put the final dishes straight onto menus within their own restaurants! The students worked with confidence and maturity and remained calm and collected with tight deadlines, photographers and judges looming over them. They did an incredible job.”
