Angus – Champion Swimmer

Meet Angus, Year 11’s champion swimmer

It was an amazing summer for Angus.

On Friday 3rd August 2018 he competed in the 50 metre breaststroke at Pond’s Forge, Sheffield in the English National Summer Swimming Championships.

Only the fastest 20 swimmers in England in each age group are invited.  Only 2 other boys from Cornwall attended this Championship in different events.

Angus entered the competition seeded 18th.

He won his heat with a 0.41 second PB to achieve 32.20, from lane 7.  This meant he reached the final and was 6th seed going into that.

He came 7th in the final with another 0.20 second PB to achieve a 32.00.

Angus achieved all of this without a head coach at St Austell swimming club.

In the lead up Angus trained twice a week at St Austell and travelled to Plymouth every Tuesday and Thursday for 2 hour training sessions with the Devonport swimming coach.

Angus worked so hard and persevered through a really tricky time to achieve this incredible result.

Last weekend Angus went to Sheffield as part of the Cornwall Swim team, swimming the 100m breaststroke, 100m backstroke, 50m freestyle in the Medley Relay and 50m freestyle in the Cannon Relay.

He heads to Millfield on the 3rd and 4th November for the Winter Regional Championships, having qualified for 6 events.  However, he will swim in 5 events: 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m breaststroke and 100m Individual Medley.

He goes to Jersey to compete the weekend before that and, at the end of November, he will play waterpolo for the Cornwall team at Millfield in the Regional County Tournament.
