Year 9 Bake Off!

On Thursday 28th January, Year 9 presented their take on the BBC’s popular baking competition with their Charity Bake Off, to raise money for Make a Wish Foundation, their chosen charity for this year.

Alongside cakes of all shapes and sizes made by students from throughout Year 9 and staff across the school, each form presented a ‘Showstopper’ to Technology staff and Bake Off Judges Mrs Stevens, Mrs Small, Miss Andrews and Mrs Knowles. The team were set the difficult task of discussing the winners and runners up in The Core, based on technical achievement and appearance.

Unlike the Great British Bake Off, however, the tasting was left until after the auction, when staff and students met in the hall to bid on Showstoppers and try to raise as much money during break time as possible. With Mr Johnson leading the auction, over £100 was raised for Make a Wish in under 20 minutes.

Showstoppers included the entire Solar System (complete with scientifically accurate asteroid belt made of chocolate stars), Pac Man, a Harry Potter tribute and a cake with a Cancer Research theme.

The grand total raised for their charity on the day was £365.43.

“I am so impressed with my year – what a way to raise money for a great cause. They’ve shown real enthusiasm and talent and the standard of baking is the best I’ve ever seen. Well done!” (Mr Barnett)

Congratulations to 9EC, pictured above, who wowed judges with dedication and teamwork through their edible representation of the Solar System.
