Science

The Science Faculty’s vision is to produce scientifically literate students who can think and problem solve independently. We aim to do this by active engagement of all students through practical, written and discussion based tasks throughout both key stage 3 and 4.

To achieve this we have a wealth of professional and experienced staff that are qualified to deliver all aspects of the curriculum and do so in nine purpose build science laboratories. Penrice has been recognised nationally as being in the top 20 schools for the number of students continuing to study A level science.

What will the lessons be like?
In the science lessons you will have a chance to sample a portion of what life as a scientist is like. You will be introduced to an environment where investigation through practical experimentation is encouraged. Where debate on current issues is an integral part of your development as a scientist. Regular use of ICT by students and staff will add to, and enrich the learning experience, showing you the wealth of exciting, fun and thought provoking topics that make science such a dynamic and thrilling subject.

Year 7 Science

Our Year 7 Students will experience a broad range of different aspects of science, through a varied and engaging scheme of learning. They will work through a variety of Biology, Chemistry and Physics topics, via a significant amount of practical and investigative work that has been crafted to introduce them to working in a laboratory environment and start to prepare them for the GCSE curriculum. Students will begin to develop a range of scientific skills from; collecting data, applying subject knowledge to explain concepts, analysing data and planning investigations.

Year 8 Science

Our Year 8 Students will experience a broad range of different aspects of science, through a varied and engaging scheme of learning. They will be exposed to a significant amount of practical and investigative work that has been crafted to fully prepare them for the GCSE curriculum. Students will develop a range of scientific skills from; collecting data, applying subject knowledge to explain concepts, analysing data and planning investigations.

Year 9 Science

Our Year 9 Students will experience a broad range of different aspects of science, through the AQA combined or AQA Biology, Chemistry and Physics pathways (new spec first examined 2018). They will be exposed to a significant amount of practical and investigative work that has been crafted to fully prepare them for their GCSE examinations. There are a number of required practical investigations which will be embedded into their learning. Students will develop a range of scientific skills from; collecting data, applying subject knowledge to explain concepts, analysing data and planning investigations

Year 10 Combined Science

Our Year 10 Students will experience a broad range of different aspects of science.  They will be exposed to a significant amount of practical and investigative work that has been crafted to fully prepare them for their GCSE examinations. Students will develop a range of scientific skills from; collecting data, applying subject knowledge to explain concepts, analysing data and planning investigations. Students began studying this course in Year 9 and will continue to build on their knowledge, understanding and practical techniques throughout Year 10. Students will gain 2 GCSEs from this course.

Year 10 Separate Science

Our Year 10 Students will experience a broad range of different aspects of science  through the Biology, Chemistry and Physics pathways. Students will gain 3 GCSEs from this course.
