Star Student: Harriet, Year 11

This week’s Year 11 assembly celebrated the achievements of Penrice students who completed work experience placements before the summer break. Awards included Best Log Book in each Tutor Group, presented by tutors, the Head of Year Award, presented by Mr Wood for those nominated by their employers or by Penrice staff who visited during the week, and Outstanding Work Experience Student.

This week’s Star Student is Deputy Head Girl, Harriet Hickling, who was awarded Outstanding Work Experience Student and presented the award by Cheryl Newton, Director of Studies at Truro College, who was a guest speaker in the assembly.

Harriet did her work experience placement at Blantyre Day Centre for disabled adults. She explains:

“This type of placement was my first choice and something that I would love to carry on with in the future. The experience was something I could never forget due to it having been one of the most full on but rewarding weeks of my life so far. During my five day placement I made so many amazing friendships with not only the staff but the lovely people there, each with their own individual personality. Winning the Work Experience Award has made me only more determined to carry on with a career in the future; I am extremely grateful for the recognition from the staff. I got involved with lots of activities throughout the week including a steps class and a mock Olympics day.”

“I would encourage anyone looking for a work experience placement to aim high and reach out from your comfort zone. You’re being given the opportunity to be a part of an amazing experience that you will take with you throughout the rest of your life, so you may as well make the most of it. Also, I can’t stress enough how important it is to do something you know you will enjoy. I was offered a future placement at Blantyre and I would happily accept this once I have the right qualifications and training. I could not be happier!”

As well as the certificate, Harriet receives a complimentary ticket to the Year 11 Ball next May.

Well done to everyone who received an award for their efforts during Work Experience Week. You can read more about Work Experience at Penrice here.
