Sport Report: 29/04/2016

Given the temperature it has made for an interesting week completing Athletics and Cricket, however the students’ outstanding commitment to their sport has shone through again and made it another excellent week in PE.

64 boys and girls were out on Monday at Cricket training, and on Tuesday over 100 students were out taking part in either Athletics training or two cricket matches against Brannel.

On Tuesday, in cold and windy conditions, the Year 7 team won their first cricket match of the season, beating Brannel comfortably by 8 wickets. Having been made to bowl for the second consecutive week, the boys bowled excellently in restricting Brannel to 95/6. Wickets were shared around; Cameron Roach, Alec Nile and Jowan Conibear-Trathen getting one, and the impressive Callum Mercer two. In reply Alec Nile and Oscar Acraman, again opening the innings, got the boys off to a flying start, Nile retiring after a quick fire 23 and Acraman after an elegant 14. Jowan Conibear-Trathen, Finn Nutbeam and Callum Mercer also all reached double figures as they chased the score down after 12 overs.

The Year 8s had a tough afternoon against a strong Brannel team. Things started well when Millie Bray took a wicket with the very first ball of the match however, although Millie and the boys bowled well, Brannel finished their innings on an impressive 121/4. In reply Penrice mustered a final score of 45/5, Joe Maunder the leading batsman with 8. The cup fixtures begin in the next couple of weeks.

This week the Athletics at Par saw the male and female athletes from Year 7 take part in their first Athletics meet. There were many nerves going around beforehand but as usual all competed and performed admirably, particularly the Year 7 girls on debut. The Year 9 boys, still missing a few regulars, competed well as usual challenging for top three finishes in all events, as did the Year 9 girls. Unfortunately at the time of printing a full list of results are not available; these will be posted in next week’s report.

Next week at Par it is the turn of Year 8s and Year 10s again to compete. On Saturday Kaya Cairney, Cari Jones, Ellen Kenny will be competing in the combined events Cornwall Athletics championships at Par – each competitor has to complete a pentathlon of the following events; hurdles, high jump, shot, javelin and 800. Those who are successful, will go onto represent Cornwall in the regionals.
