Penrice Host and Win Rugby Tournament On Tuesday 29th September, we hosted the U16 Army 10S Rugby Tournament 2015, inviting schools from all over Cornwall to compete in a round-robin style event. After a full afternoon of highly competitive rugby, Penrice emerged as winners. The eight teams – Newquay Treviglas, Helston, Richard Lander, Fowey, Penair, Penryn and Redruth – joined hosts Penrice competing in 28 games in the sun. The tournament, which has been running for over five years now, was organised by AFCO Redruth, who opened it up to all schools in the county.Lsgt Steve Cortis, Recruiting Co-Ordinator at ACC Redruth, explained: “This tournament is all about experience. It’s competitive, closely fought and hard work, but the rugby time is brilliant. We’re all big fans of the sport and we respect the physical challenge that comes with it, so it’s a great event. We’re hoping to expand the tournament to cover other sports like netball, too.”Mr Tucker, Head of PE and Rugby Coach, said: “This tournament was a big step up from the summer school games tournament for our students, with the boys having to play a total of 100 minutes of rugby. No weak teams in the competition meant that the physicality and intensity didn’t let up throughout the day. It was a fantastic advert for Cornish school rugby.”With two games to go, Penrice, Richard Lander and Penryn were all unbeaten. Penryn beat Richard Lander, leaving Penrice needing to beat both teams to be crowned champions.Mr Tucker continued: “The last game came down to who wanted it more and Penrice showed fantastic determination to fight off the cramp and fatigue to take the victory. We beat Penryn by one try then beat Richard Lander in the final game. The boys should be incredibly proud of their effort.”Ben Plummer from Year 11, pictured above outside the scrum, was awarded player of the tournament by the organisers, scoring 9 try’s from scrum half. He also scored the winner in the toughest matches against Redruth and Penryn. You can see more pictures in our gallery.
