Interview: Football Star Chelsea On Friday 21st October, Chelsea from Year 8 and Olivia from Year 9 took part in the Cornwall School’s FA Trials. All girls of school age that play football for Cornwall or Devon Advanced Coaching Centres were invited to the trials, held at Brannel School. After the trials, Chelsea and Olivia were successful in being selected for the Cornwall School’s FA U14’s Squad 2016/17 to represent all schools in Cornwall in their sport! We spoke with Chelsea about the selection and what she loves about playing football. So what happened after the trials? “We travelled to Truro College to play the first round of the English School’s Football Association Cup! Unfortunately after a very close and hard fought game, we lost 2-1 to West Gamorgan.” How did it feel playing for Cornwall?! “Amazing, even though we lost, Cornwall played brilliantly for their first time together as a new team and we really can’t wait for more friendlies!” How long have you been playing football and what do you like about it? “Since I was about 5 or 6! I love meeting new people and having the chance to play as a team.” Do you play locally too? “I also play for Charlestown Angels, we have matches once every two weeks and we train once a week.” What position do you play? “I usually play midfield or up-front, but I prefer up-front as I get to score more goals. Last season I scored 142 goals!” Do you have a role model when it comes to football? “It would have to be (Barcelona forward and Argentine Captain) Lionel Messi! He’s inspirational with his skills and his play. He’s the world number one footballer at the moment.” Who do you support? “Chelsea of course!” What’s next? “I’m playing for Cornwall again during the Christmas holidays away.” Any advice for other girls who want to get involved in football? “Start playing, keep practicing, keep at it – eventually you’ll join teams, meet people and have fun!” Big well done to Chelsea and Olivia for being selected and thank you to Chelsea for sharing the news – she’ll keep us in the loop in the New Year so we look forward to hearing more!
