Inspiring Young Women at College

Last week, a group of Year 9 students from Penrice attended an Inspiring Young Women event at Cornwall College St Austell.

The event, delivered by Leading Women UK in partnership with The Cornwall College Group, was packed with speakers, employment information, activities and role models from a variety of industry backgrounds. To challenge perceptions, the 12 role models – including a lawyer, firefighter, salon owner, software tester and a project manager – stood on stage while the students were challenged to guess their careers.  The young women then networked with these professionals and had a unique opportunity to ask questions and gain an insight into what paths they followed to achieve their career goals.

Rachel Jones, founder of Leading Women UK, explained on the day: “The Inspiring Young Women programme is designed to encourage young women to realise their aspirations, be inspired and prepare for employment and enterprise. Young women are challenged in the choices they make by negative media and peer pressure, particularly when choosing their options and developing through many personal changes during their early teenage years. Through this programme, we hope to make these decisions easier by explaining all the possible routes to employment and by meeting role models from a variety of sectors.”
