Harvey the Dog This term we welcomed a brand new member of staff– Harvey the Dog.Harvey, an 8 year old Springer Spaniel, has been enrolled on the Pets as Therapy and Read 2 Dogs schemes and is now officially a member of staff at Penrice; the Academy being his first assignment as a ‘Therapy Dog’.Miss Laura Seberry, Penrice Learning Supervisor, is his owner and trainer. She explains: “Harvey is a great family dog and, as he got older, I started to wonder how other people might benefit from his caring nature. I learnt about how anxiety can be relieved through the presence of an animal, and, as Harvey is calm, kind and placid he is the perfect dog for the job!”Harvey is trained to ‘listen’ to reluctant readers, help with student confidence and provide comfort if needed. Students can also take him for walks around the grounds.Miss Seberry continued: “We’re hoping he will be working with us for a long time to come. He will never judge; he’s a great listener!”Harvey has spent time getting to know the school and its community and is already proving popular in lessons. He is set to work 2 days a week and is available for staff booking – he even has his own diary.Pictured: Year 7s Letitia Tucker and Maisie Keen read to Harvey and Miss SeberryRead more: Harvey Meets the BBC!
